Summer Computer Tips
Keep your system safe from heat, viruses, and storms.
With the blazing hot temperatures, long vacations, and monsoon thunderstorms, summer can be a hazardous time for your computer systems!  Here are a few tips to keep your equipment safe this summer.summer sky
  • Heat is your computer's enemy, so keep it as cool as possible.  Keep your system out of direct sunlight and away from other direct sources of heat.  Make sure that the power supply and CPU fans on your system are functioning properly.  Keep system components dust-free to keep them from overheating and shorting out.  Keeping your computer cool, clean and ventilated will help your system last longer and perform better!
  • Holiday travelers should be on alert when arriving home from long weekends, such as the Fourth of July, a popular time for computer viruses to spread.  Most computer users have a tendency to turn off their computers when away on trips, which means you're not getting newly-released anti-virus patches or anti-spyware updates; the two most common areas that cause computers problems. We recommend you update anti-virus and anti-spyware scans before opening e-mail or going online after an extended absence.
  • When big thunderstorms strike, it's best to turn off your computer.  Brown-outs can also pose a dangerous risk for your computer system.  Ask us about options for an uninterruptible power supply for your system to provide power when the utility goes out, protecting your business from serious disruption or data loss.
Managing Email Overload
Tips to help you organize the chaos!
green envelopeDo you spend half your day reading and responding to email?  Here are a few tips to manage the email overload:
1. Get a search tool on your PC or notebook, such as Google Desktop Search, Windows Desktop Search, or X1 by Yahoo.  These tools index all of the emails, files, pictures, documents, etc. on your hard drive in advance. When you search for them, the files that match whatever you search for get called up instantly and update as fast as you can type another letter.
2. Eliminate SPAM from making it to your inbox.  Although SPAM continues to get worse, some users still have not done anything about it.  Sorting through unwanted emails not only wastes your valuable time, it puts your computer at risk of viruses, worms, and hackers.  If you need help ridding your inbox of potentially harmful emails, talk to us about a spam filter today!
3. Create rules in Outlook to direct all "automated" emails to their own folder. If you subscribe to regular list-serves, you can direct them to a new folder called "List Serves."  This keeps them out of your inbox and moves them into a lower priority folder which can be reviewed on weekly basis.
4. Keep your inbox clean. Use your inbox as a workflow inbox. If you need to work on something, keep it in your inbox.  Otherwise, save it in another folder or delete it.
5. Rename your email subjects so that you can recall emails later much more quickly.  This can save you countless hours searching for things later because emails will be titled with a relevant subject.
